Layers of Romance

The house was new, well built and completely anonymous. Gray everything, flat walls, cabinetry chosen from a short list, and no single moment in the entire home that belonged to the people living in it. The brief was to add character without turning the house into a costume.

The problem

Builder-grade interiors tend to fail in the same way: the plan is fine, the finishes are inoffensive, and there is nothing to hold your attention. Ceilings are blank, walls are flat, storage is generic, and lighting is whatever the electrician was handed on plan day.

The problem

Builder-grade interiors tend to fail in the same way: the plan is fine, the finishes are inoffensive, and there is nothing to hold your attention. Ceilings are blank, walls are flat, storage is generic, and lighting is whatever the electrician was handed on plan day.

The thinking

We layered, which is where the project name came from. Crown molding with concealed uplighting gave the main rooms a soft glow at night that no lamp can imitate. V-groove paneling and millwork added texture on walls that had none. Custom cabinetry replaced the builder boxes, and the vanities were designed as furniture rather than casework.

Wallpaper was used deliberately, not everywhere, and each bathroom was allowed to have its own personality. Porcelain slab was specified where the material needed to feel continuous, and every lighting fixture was reselected so the house reads as one decision rather than fifty.

Why it matters

Character is built in layers, not bought in a single purchase. When the millwork, lighting, cabinetry and finishes are specified together, an ordinary floor plan starts to feel like a custom home, and it holds its value in a way that trend-driven decorating does not.
