A mountain house that uses the materials of its own site: local stone, metal and beetle-kill pine, detailed cleanly so the palette reads as sophisticated rather than rustic.
The Vision
Mountain homes tend to go one of two directions, heavy lodge or glass box. Neither suited this site or these owners, who wanted warmth without weight.
The Design Thinking
Local stone and beetle-kill pine give the house its warmth, steel accents keep the detailing sharp, and varied rooflines break the mass so the building sits into the slope instead of on top of it.
A tree well and rooftop garden pull the landscape into the architecture, and two fireplaces anchor the interior and exterior living spaces so the house is usable in every season.
Why It Matters
Materials sourced from the place you are building are the shortcut to a house that looks like it belongs there. Everything after that is detailing.
